Actor Tom Payne reveals an early script for The Walking Dead 's ninth season premiere gave Jesus his first on-screen boyfriend when the episode caught up with him after an month time jump.
Jesus was first confirmed to be gay in Season 7 episode 14, "The Other Side," where he told Maggie Lauren Cohan about his struggle to get close to "neighbors, friends, boyfriends.
Payne did not elaborate on the boyfriend's identity or whether this was a character already familiar to audiences.
In a interview, Payne said it might have been "quite lazy" romantically pairing Jesus and Aaron on the TV show despite the characters being partners in creator Robert Kirkman's comic book.
They should get together! Acknowledging their romantic history, Payne added, "I could see that happening. But a long-term [relationship]?
I'm not sure about that. They have a lot in common, and they did connect in a few different ways. It was nice to have them chatting; their sensibilities were similar.
They were quite natural friends. The comic book relationship was "kind of alluded to, in points," Marquand said during a convention appearance.

Negan refuses and states that he has a different plan and brings out Gregory. Paul watches in horror as Gregory informs him and the other members of the Hilltop rebel group that Hilltop has sided with the Saviors and that if they want to see their friends and families again they must surrender.
Rick tells Paul that he will understand if he chooses to leave the battle. However Paul affirms that he's staying, saying that "all I have at the Hilltop are a bunch of books.
On their way out of the battlefield, Kal informs Paul that he can't go through with the battle, knowing Negan has control over the Hilltop.
After Negan declares war on Rick's forces, Paul is seen crouched with Rick behind a bus, ducking from Savior gunfire.
He notes the roamers around the wall are going crazy and asks Rick if he's really sure his plan will work.
To which Rick replies by saying; "Yes, I am. Paul is still unsure that Rick's plan will work, however Rick assures him that it will.
After getting on one of the buses, he tries to stop Holly who says that she is trying to find Rick. His attempt to stop her fails and she goes to confront Rick.
After escaping from an oncoming herd, drawn to the Sanctuary by the noise of the battle, Paul finds Michonne. She asks him where Rick is.
He responds by saying that, as part of the plan, Rick stayed behind. However he is cut short when Rick appears behind him and declares that the war has just begun.
A few hours later Paul and Rick are talking about the battle and how Holly smashed through the Sanctuary's fences instead of Rick, who blames himself for her actions.
He goes on to say that he knows Negan would never kill him immediately and that he will kill Holly.
Paul tells him to eat and that there is nothing they can do about Holly, however he says that the Saviors are probably too busy with the zombies to care about Holly.
Rick says that he hopes he is right and Paul responds saying; "Me too. He, alongside Eric , are the first people to run into combat, however, Eric is gunned down by a Savior and Paul quickly rushes to disarm another Savior in order to gain access to the inside of the outpost.
Paul holds the Savior at gunpoint so that he will open the door for Paul and the rest of the fighters.
The Savior does so and is immediately shot in the head by Paul, who proceeds to gun down the Saviors who opened the door and the oncoming Savior forces alongside Rick and the others.
After capturing the Savior outpost, Paul burns the bodies of the fallen Army and Savior members.
He soon catches up with Rick and asks him if he thinks the undead are laughing at them. Rick tells him that he prefers to not think about it and they both join the other Army members and depart back to Alexandria.
After arriving back at the Safe-Zone, Paul joins a meeting to discuss the next phase of the war plans. Shortly after, Paul and the other meeting members are startled by a large explosion, caused by a Savior grenade and are forced to take cover.
Soon after this, Negan and his Saviors begin to bombard the Safe-Zone with grenades. Paul is seen searching for Rick in the chaos.
Rick is almost killed by a grenade thrown by one of the Saviors, but, Jesus manages to toss it over the wall and kill a Savior named Gary.
After doing so, he investigates some gunfire coming from outside the Safe-Zone and finds that Dwight has killed his Savior squad.
Dwight tells him that he is on Rick's side, not Negan's, and will do whatever it takes to help them win.
After the Saviors' attack on the Alexandria Safe-Zone, Paul, Nicholas, and a few other men venture outside the damaged Safe-Zone walls and start clearing out the zombies drawn to Alexandria by the battle's noise.
Sometime during this, Paul finds out about Eugene's capture by the Saviors and informs Rick. He tries to persuade Rick to let him go and help Eugene and the other captured Alexandria residents, but, Rick tells him that he will just get himself killed.
He then travels with Rick, and all the relocating Alexandrians, to the Hilltop. After arriving at Hilltop, Paul is seen in his room reading when he hears a knock on the door.
It is Alex , who says it feels like they haven't talked in forever, Paul apologizes to him, saying he has had a lot on his mind, and invites him in.
Alex asks Paul if he could read to him, showing that they are in a relationship with each other. It is shown that at some point after arriving back at the Hilltop, Paul told Rick about a small town that is located about half a mile from the Hilltop that could prove to be of some use to them in the war.
Rick agrees and decides to make it a good spot to move the people who are unable to fight, as well as making it a rendezvous point in the event that the Hilltop is destroyed.
Soon after Paul and the group discuss their plans of attack and defense against the Saviors, the Hilltop is attacked by Negan and most of his Saviors.
Paul is one of the first to spring to the Hilltop's defense, witnessing Kal being killed by the Saviors. However, Paul is unmoved by this and continues to fight the Saviors alongside Rick.
After a few minutes of gunfire, Rick tells Paul to retreat back to the Hilltop mansion and he does so, continuing to provide cover-fire for Rick and the others.
Much later into the battle of Hilltop, Rick is shot through the torso with an arrow by Dwight and Nicholas starts to escort him back to Harlan Carson in the Hilltop's mansion through the cover of nightfall.
However, a lone Savior catches them off-guard and almost kills them, but, Paul comes to their rescue and dropkicks the lone Savior in the face.
Paul then tells Nicholas to get back the Hilltop mansion before the Saviors cut the area off, Paul saying he will stay back and handle the lone Savior.
After the battle finishes and Negan retreats from the Hilltop, Paul and Michonne begin to observe the damage done to Hilltop, zombies slowly shambling towards them through the broken gate.
Michonne tells him that the noise from the battle will draw even more zombies to the Hilltop, Paul saying that they should attempt to clear the invading zombies out before anymore come, him and Michonne then work together to clear the Hilltop of zombies.
Later in their clean out of Hilltop, Michonne gets Paul's attention by showing him a Savior knife coated in zombie blood. Paul then brings the knife to Harlan Carson and he tells Paul that anyone hit by a Savior weapon in the battle will die no matter how minor their injuries.
After presenting Harlan with the infected knife, Paul resumes his duty of clearing the zombies building up inside Hilltop alongside Michonne.
The two are quickly swarmed by the undead horde and are forced to retreat backwards. Paul distracts the entire horde to allow Michonne to escape away easily.
While he is leading the horde away from Michonne, Eugene arrives back at Hilltop, having escaped his capture at the hands of The Saviors.
Paul tells him and the other people he brought with him to abandon their van and head to the Hilltop's mansion. Eugene tells him that the van is full of bullets he manufactured, this revelation causing Paul to change his plan of action, telling Eugene to help him clear the zombies to allow the van a path to the mansion.
Paul and the others successfully do so, calming the tide of undead for the meantime. Paul and many others later venture outside the Hilltop walls to set up and ambush for Negan and his Saviors for when they arrive later on.
After much waiting, Negan arrives with the rest of his Saviors and Rick confronts him just outside of the Hilltop's gate. After a long discussion between the two of them, Rick slashes Negan's throat with a knife, sparking the Saviors to attack Rick and the Hilltop.
However, the Saviors are quickly out-maneuvered by Paul and the rest of his strike team, as they manage to kill several Saviors.
Dwight soon picks up Lucille in the midst of the battle and declares that the war is over, the Saviors immediately surrendering to Paul and the others, thus ending their reign of terror.
In the months after Negan's incarceration, Paul chooses to stay in Alexandria rather than going back to Hilltop. He later joins a group of people alongside Eugene, Rosita, Aaron and Heath who tasked with keeping herds away from Alexandria and the other communities while scouting for new people to bring into Alexandria.
Two years after the war against Negan and his Saviors, Jesus and the rest of Alexandria's scout force are busy leading a massive herd away from the Kingdom until they bump into a group of six people led by a woman named Magna.
Paul sees that the group are being attacked by the herd that he and the other members of the force are directing. Paul quickly springs to action and saves Magna by killing a zombie that was about to bite her.
After a few more minutes of fighting, Aaron uses a battle-horn to get the herd to follow him, leaving Paul to talk with Magna and her group in peace.
Paul tells her that she is free to come with him back to Alexandria in attempt to join the community there if she and her group hand over their weapons, also offering the alternative of the two going their separate ways if Magna does not feel comfortable in trusting Paul.
Magna says she will only come if Paul promises that their community is worth it; he answers that they have plenty of food, instantly convincing her.
After arriving back at Alexandria with Magna and her group, he escorts them to Alexandria's great hall where Rick is waiting to speak with Magna about her group staying at the community.
After Magna agrees to Rick's terms of handing over her group's weapons, he is asked by Rick to locate Eugene and bring him a report on their mission of driving off the herd.
Before Rick and Carl start their trip to the Hilltop, he is seen asking Carl to deliver a letter to Alex. Jesus goes to Andrea's house to check in before leaving and is prepared to attack Magna's group when he sees them inside.
Andrea calls him off, however, and he relents. Later on, he meets up with Darius , and they decide to go look for Nathaniel, who has gone missing since the morning.
He eventually decides to end the search and go back, but as they're leaving his group is attacked by disguised people with knives.
Jesus easily manages to fight off his numerous attackers and kills all but one of them, saving Darius in the process.
He takes a wounded Darius and the captured Whisperer back to the Hilltop, not mere moments before Carl Grimes approaches with a wounded Sophia, claiming to have killed two resident boys.
Paul soon takes the captured Whisperer to one of the Hilltop's holding cells for interrogation.
He discovers that the Whisperer wears a mask to disguise herself as a zombie and that her name is Lydia. Jesus soon asks her what her people want and why they attacked his patrol earlier, to which she tells him that the dead protect her people and in return the Whisperers protect them.
Before Jesus can continue the interrogation he is joined by Maggie who immediately asks him what he has learnt and he mentions to her that his patrol originally thought Lydia's people to be talking zombies.
Upon hearing this Maggie drags Paul out of the holding cell and orders him to follow her to an unknown location.
They stress Carl into questioning what they need to do. Carl defends Lydia by arguing that if the group treated her better and did not imprison her, that she may open up to them.
Maggie and Jesus begin to question Lydia but she does not respond. Later, after Gregory has poisoned Maggie, Jesus enters the scene and looks horrified at the scene.
Jesus kicks him back and lifts up the weak but still alive Maggie. He sets her down and is prepared to kill Gregory should anything happen to her, but Maggie protests and requests he be jailed instead.
After locking him up, Jesus and Maggie are approached by Oscar , who informs them of the Whisperers' presence. Jesus is later present during Carl and Maggie's argument.
Paul is seen helping Maggie pack for her journey back to the Hilltop, he also decides to stay at Alexandria to help Rick for the war with The Whisperers.
Paul enters Aaron 's bedroom as he is still recovering from his attack. He tells him that Rick sent him to gather troops from the Hilltop for the upcoming war.
Alex bursts in the room and jumps to the assumption that Jesus and Aaron are finally dating. Jesus tells him that it isn't what it looks like, however Alex continues to tease them.
Jesus leaves, telling Arron to get well soon. Eugene realizes there are too many and they will only be able to shave off a hundred or so at a time.
Andrea insists the plan will still work. She climbs down from her horse and starts killing roamers by herself, telling Jesus they will take turns until they have cleared them all.
When Andrea was bitten and goes to Alexandria, Jesus say goodbye to Andrea and he supports Rick alongside the other his friends.
Rick asks Paul for him to go on the trip to Ohio. Paul is very hesitant thinking that someone else is more fit for the job. He then admits that because of Aaron is the main reason why he doesn't want to go.
The next day Rick asks Paul to keep an eye on Dwight. Later, Paul confesses to Aaron that he loves him. Jesus along with Aaron travel to the Hilltop, unable to make it there they camp out and are encountered by Beta.
Jesus tries to right Beta off but is overwhelm and is about to be killed by Beta. Aaron safes Jesus just in time and kills Beta. Later they find the Whisperer camp and killed all that remained saving a family of three which they design to take them back with them.
Paul and Rick are very good friends. At first, Rick was extremely suspicious of Paul, but after discovering that Paul's description of the Hilltop is legit, Rick slowly comes to trust Paul and Paul is now one of Rick's most trusted allies.
He has proven himself to be an important and prominent member of Rick's group, even moving to Alexandria from the Hilltop in an attempt to assist Rick on the front lines against Negan.
Paul holds a great deal of respect for Rick for being the first of the D. Paul also believes that Rick is the best chance humanity has at rebuilding itself in the post-apocalyptic world and stated that he would even sacrifice his own life in order to help Rick survive, evidenced when Paul fought off over fifteen Saviors alone and unarmed to save Rick and his group from certain death.
Aaron and Paul are currently in a relationship. They are seen together sneaking towards a Savior outpost in Issue when Aaron notes jokingly that Jesus is a bit of a show off.
In Issue Michonne tries to suggest that Aaron pursue a relationship with Jesus. Aaron says that even though Jesus is great, attractive, and kind, he does not see him in that way compared to Eric.
In Issue Jesus is shown to care for Aaron, as evident when he visits Aaron who is recovering from his attack.
Aaron says that he never knew Jesus cared, but says that he is indeed getting better. Alex teases that Jesus and Aaron should be a couple because of how alike they are, Jesus gets flustered and soon leaves, telling Aaron to get better soon.
In Issue , just before they entered the skirmish against the Whisperers, Jesus indicated to Michonne that he was in fact interested in Aaron.
In Issue , Paul says to Rick that he and Aaron are in a relationship. In issue , Jesus and Aaron talk about going to the Hilltop.
Aaron is not sure if he feels useful and Jesus says he is pretty useful for him. Jesus confesses he is in love with him and Aaron is speechless but cleary happy with the statement.
Jesus and Maggie have a strong relationship. After the interrogations, Rick eventually decides to let Paul take him to Hilltop. On the way, Paul reveals that he could have escaped any time but remained there to see if Rick could be trusted.
The two make up and continue on their way. After reaching Hilltop, Paul defends Rick after he kills a citizen who has been sent by Negan to deliver a message.
Paul then reveals to Rick and his group, that he and the rest of his people have for months been under siege by the Saviors. He attempts to track them back to their base, but is caught and chased back to the colony.
In the aftermath of Glenn 's death at the hands of Negan, he decides to join Rick in his fight against the Saviors and becomes a key member in Rick's decision-making committee.
After Rick decides to let go of a captive Dwight, Rick tells Paul to follow him and see what they are up against, but to tell no one of their plans.
After gearing up, Paul begins to follow Dwight, hoping to discover the Saviors base of operations. He is later ambushed by three Saviors.
As he tries to fight off the Savior trio, he is subdued by one of the members. After being knocked to the floor, Paul is almost killed by the Saviors; however, he is saved by Dwight and another Savior, who tell Paul's attackers to stand down, as they have some "important" questions for Paul.
Dwight and the other Savior tie Paul up and load him onto a jeep. They drive to Sanctuary, allowing Paul to get a good look at the area and he bails out of the jeep at the very last second, narrowly avoiding capture and reports it back to Rick.
He introduces Rick to Ezekiel , the leader of the Kingdom, in the hopes of forming the three communities into standing against the Saviors.
As he sneaks into the Hilltop to tell Maggie of Rick's plan, he learns that Kal betrayed him and ran off to inform the Saviors of their plan in which Jesus catches up to him and convinces him to change his mind.
He continues to recruit members of the Hilltop, much to Gregory 's dismay. He then grabs a Savior by his foot and trips him over. The Saviors open fire, but instead of hitting Paul they kill the Savior.
Negan tells them to hold fire and at that moment Paul throws himself at the nearest Savior and orders Rick, Heath, Holly, and Nicholas into a trench.
He proceeds to fight the Saviors until he works his way to Negan, whom he disarms and captures. Negan frantically tells the Saviors to hold fire and Paul issues an order to let the survivors go and threatens to kill Negan.
He tells Paul that even if he were to succeed, the Saviors would still open fire and kill Paul. However it is revealed that Paul's intentions were to stall the Saviors until Ezekiel and his soldiers arrive.
Jesus continues to aid Rick and Ezekiel in their fight against the Saviors until Negan is defeated. Two years after Negan's incarceration, Jesus acts as Maggie 's second-in-command at the Hilltop, while still making periodic visits to Alexandria.
Robert Kirkman has confirmed that Jesus will recur in future seasons of the show. Jesus makes his debut in the episode " The Next World ," first seen bumping into Rick who is on a supply run with Daryl.
Jesus pulls a smooth-talking con on them, pick-pocketing keys from Rick and planting the idea of approaching walkers in their mind so that they react predictably when firecrackers he had set go off, allowing him to drive off with their truck of supplies.
When attacked by Rick and Daryl later, Jesus is able to physically defend himself, displaying impressive combat abilities, though he surrenders when they threaten him at gunpoint.
Jesus is bound at his wrists and ankles and left at the side of the road but in seconds is able to free himself and climb onto the truck unobserved.
Later, when they realize he is on the truck and slam on the brakes, Jesus takes a considerable fall at speed but is immediately able to get up and run, outpacing Daryl who gives chase.
Jesus gets into the truck where he is fought by Daryl, and grabs Daryl's gun in order to kill a walker that would have otherwise attacked Daryl from behind.
Daryl pulls Jesus from the truck, which is accidentally released of its brakes, and Jesus is knocked unconscious in the process of the truck rolling backwards into a lake.
Jesus is brought back to Alexandria and despite being bound in a locked room in a guarded house, Jesus is able to free himself and escape confinement without raising an alarm, and identify and infiltrate Rick's home where he asks to speak with Rick.
In the following episode, " Knots Untie ", Jesus is humble about his impressive escape, saying that, "Knots untie, locks get picked, entrophy comes from order," suggestive of a philosophy that seeks harmony rather than control.
While he was free, Jesus located, infiltrated and took an accounting of Alexandria's armory and food supplies, and an estimate of their population.
Noting that they are low on provisions, he suggests they trade with his community and takes them to The Hilltop. When Gregory, The Hilltop's leader, tries to get the upper hand on the Alexandrians who might face starvation without their food, Jesus works his influence to convince The Hilltop that being charitable with the Alexandrians in their time of need and building a relationship of trust and respect will pay back far more in the future than this single exchange.
Jesus also intercedes when Rick and his group stop an assassination attempt on Gregory instigated by Negan, preventing further bloodshed.
The Hilltop has suffered considerably from The Saviors' extortions, and while they did not have enough fighters or ammunition to move against Negan and his gang, Jesus readily volunteers to join when Daryl and the group offers to take out Negan and rescue Craig, a Hilltop hostage.
He later comforts Tara who is feeling guilty about lying to Denise and her experiences when she was last involved in an attack on a community of survivors.
Jesus tells Tara that it is her love for Denise which gives her a reason to fight. When gunfire breaks out, Jesus and Tara both urge Andy and Craig to leave, to ensure The Hilltop is not connected to the attack on the Saviors, though Jesus dons his mask and rushes in with confidence that the Saviors will never see him.
He is later seen saving Glenn and Heath from a dying Savior by shooting him before stating "So this is the next world. Jesus first appears in the fifth episode of the season, " Go Getters ", where he attempts to comfort Maggie and Sasha who are hiding in the Hilltop from Negan on their lost loved ones.
Gregory decides that the two of them must leave and when Jesus disagrees, Gregory states he is free to go with them. Whatever relationship Jesus might have had that season would have been short-lived: in another change from the comic books, Jesus was murdered by the Whisperers in the Season 9 mid-season finale "Evolution.
